From AI Adoption to AI Readiness

A notable shift is taking place in how many organizations think about AI adoption. The question once focused on when a company should start adopting AI is now shifting toward how ready that organization is to run AI at greater scale. This shift aligns with IBM's perspective on the direction of business transformation across the Asia Pacific region.

Projected AI Contribution to the Digital Economy

IBM projects that by 2030, AI could contribute to half of all new digital business value created in the Asia Pacific region. Hans Dekkers, General Manager of IBM Asia Pacific, said Indonesia has a major opportunity to leverage Agentic AI as a driver of its next growth phase, helping organizations work more efficiently, innovate faster, and grow responsibly.

One frequently cited example of implementation is IBM's collaboration with Bank Central Asia (BCA), where IBM's solutions have helped the company gain deeper business insights while improving operational effectiveness. IBM has also introduced IBM Bob, an Agentic AI-based software development platform capable of coordinating multiple AI models and automatically selecting the most suitable one based on cost, performance, and security requirements. IBM claims the platform is used by more than 80,000 of its employees globally, with an average productivity increase of 45 percent.

Workforce Readiness as a Determining Factor

IBM also emphasizes that the success of AI-driven transformation is not determined by technology alone. IBM research shows that the majority of CEOs in Indonesia believe the success of AI implementation depends more on human adoption than on the technology itself. Additionally, projections indicate that between 2026 and 2028, around 30 percent of Indonesia's workforce will need training in new skills to take on different roles, while more than half of the remaining workforce will need upskilling to stay effective in their current positions.

This serves as an important reminder that investment in even the most sophisticated AI platform will fall short of its potential if not matched by workforce readiness. Successful transformation is generally determined not by how quickly new technology is adopted, but by how mature an organization's preparation is in managing that change.
